Thiruvananthapuram: The strike observed by part-time specialist teachers of Samagra Shiksha Kerala (SSK) was called off after the government agreed to consider their demands. Education Minister V Sivankutty met the protesting teachers on Thursday and assured measures to increase their wages.

The salary of specialist teachers will be increased to Rs 13,400 from Rs 10,000. Further, 12 per cent of wages, which amounts to Rs 1608, will be allocated to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF).

The wage revision will have a retrospective effect from November 2022 onwards. Further, specialist teachers will also be eligible for leave and other benefits received by part-time employees. It is also directed that special teachers should work in a maximum of two schools three days a week.

The specialist teachers working under the Samagra Shiksha Kerala have been in protest since January 24. These teachers were only paid Rs 10,000 in spite of receiving Rs 29,000 during their appointment in 2016-17 for part-time jobs in schools. As a result, many school teachers were forced to leave their job and find opportunities elsewhere.
